Balkans European Road Adventure – Camping Itinerary
15 Days | Slovenia • Croatia • Serbia • Montenegro • Bosnia & Herzegovina • Italy
A 15-day overland journey through the heart of the Balkans, combining dramatic mountain scenery, historic cities, spectacular river valleys and some of southeast Europe’s finest driving roads. Travelling with your own 4×4, we journey from Slovenia to Italy through six countries, camping along the way and allowing time to explore the places that make the Balkans such a fascinating region.
Day 1 – Ljubljana, Slovenia
Our Balkans adventure begins in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s attractive and relaxed capital. After arriving and settling into camp, there will be time to meet the group, prepare the vehicles and enjoy the city before the journey south begins.
Overnight: Camping – Ljubljana area
Day 2 – Ljubljana to Zagreb, Croatia
We cross our first international border and head into Croatia towards Zagreb. Croatia’s capital combines grand Austro-Hungarian architecture with a lively café culture and atmospheric old streets.
After setting up camp, the remainder of the day is available to explore the city and enjoy our first Croatian evening.
Overnight: Camping – Zagreb area
Day 3 – Zagreb to Slavonski Brod
Leaving Zagreb behind, we travel east through the Croatian countryside towards Slavonski Brod, close to the River Sava.
This region is known for its agricultural landscapes, vineyards and traditional Croatian villages, providing a very different experience from the capital.
Overnight: Camping – Slavonski Brod area
Day 4 – Slavonski Brod to Belgrade, Serbia
Today we cross into Serbia and continue towards Belgrade, one of the great historic cities of the Balkans.
Standing at the meeting point of the Danube and Sava rivers, Belgrade has been fought over for centuries and remains one of southeast Europe’s most fascinating capitals.
There will be time to explore the city and experience its distinctive atmosphere.
Overnight: Camping – Belgrade area
Day 5 – Belgrade to Požarevac via the Danube
Leaving Belgrade, we follow the mighty River Danube eastwards through the Serbian countryside.
Our destination is Požarevac, a historic Serbian city perhaps best known internationally as the birthplace of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević.
The journey itself is the highlight today, with the Danube accompanying us for much of the route.
Overnight: Camping – Požarevac area
Day 6 – Požarevac to Kopaonik
We turn south and begin climbing into the mountains towards Kopaonik, Serbia’s largest mountain range and best-known ski resort.
The roads become increasingly scenic as we leave the lowlands behind and enter a landscape of forests, high ground and sweeping mountain views.
This is where the expedition begins to take on a distinctly more mountainous character.
Overnight: Camping – Kopaonik area
Day 7 – Kopaonik to Sjenica
A superb day of mountain driving takes us towards Sjenica in southwestern Serbia.
The region is characterised by high plateaux, remote settlements and dramatic limestone landscapes. Our route takes us towards the spectacular Uvac Canyon area, famous for its extraordinary meandering river and viewpoints.
Overnight: Camping – Sjenica area
Day 8 – Sjenica to Žabljak, Montenegro
Today we cross into Montenegro and head deeper into the Dinaric Alps.
Our destination is the mountain town of Žabljak, gateway to Durmitor National Park and the spectacular Tara River Canyon.
The combination of high mountains, forests, deep gorges and twisting roads makes this one of the outstanding driving days of the tour.
Overnight: Camping – Žabljak
Day 9 – Žabljak & Durmitor – Rest and Exploration Day
No packing up this morning.
Today is deliberately left free to enjoy the spectacular surroundings of Durmitor National Park. Take a walk, explore the mountain trails, go horse riding, visit the Tara Canyon or simply relax around camp.
Those wanting to drive can explore some of the magnificent roads around Durmitor, while anyone wanting a quieter day can simply enjoy being in one of the most beautiful mountain regions of the Balkans.
Overnight: Camping – Žabljak
Day 10 – Žabljak to Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
We leave Montenegro and cross into Bosnia & Herzegovina, travelling through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery towards Sarajevo.
Few European cities have a history quite like Sarajevo. Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav influences meet here, while reminders of the 1992–95 siege remain visible throughout the city.
Our evening provides an opportunity to experience a capital whose turbulent history contrasts with its vibrant modern character.
Overnight: Camping / suitable overnight location – Sarajevo area
Day 11 – Sarajevo to Mostar
From Sarajevo we head southwest through the mountains towards Mostar.
The journey takes us through some superb Bosnian scenery before arriving in one of the most recognisable destinations in the Balkans.
At its heart is the reconstructed Stari Most, the famous 16th-century Ottoman bridge spanning the Neretva River.
Overnight: Camping – Mostar area
Day 12 – Mostar – Exploration Day
Today the vehicles can stay parked.
We have a full day to explore Mostar, wander through its old streets, visit the bridge and riverside, and discover the complicated history of a city that became one of the defining symbols of the Bosnian War.
Beyond its recent history, Mostar is a fascinating mixture of Ottoman architecture, Balkan culture and Mediterranean influence.
Overnight: Camping – Mostar area
Day 13 – Mostar to Livno
Leaving Mostar, we head back into the mountains and towards Livno.
This less-visited region of Bosnia & Herzegovina offers open landscapes, mountain roads and a sense of remoteness that makes it particularly well suited to an overland journey.
The Livno region is also famous for the herds of wild horses that roam the surrounding high plains.
Overnight: Camping – Livno area
Day 14 – Livno to Bihać
Our journey continues north through western Bosnia towards Bihać, close to the Croatian border.
Situated on the beautiful Una River, Bihać is surrounded by forests, waterfalls and limestone scenery and provides a fitting final taste of Bosnia & Herzegovina before we begin our journey back towards western Europe.
Overnight: Camping – Bihać area
Day 15 – Bihać to Trieste, Italy
Our final driving day takes us back into Croatia before continuing towards the Adriatic and eventually crossing into Italy.
Where the route allows, we make the most of Croatia’s spectacular coastal scenery before heading towards Trieste, our final destination.
Sitting between the Adriatic and the Slovenian border, Trieste provides an atmospheric setting for our last evening together and a chance to reflect on an extraordinary journey across the Balkans.
Overnight: Camping – Trieste area
