The French Alps offer stunning natural beauty and are a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Exploring the region by 4×4 allows you to access remote and rugged areas, offering a unique and thrilling experience. Bordering Italy and Switzerland, this majestic region is characterized by soaring peaks, deep valleys, and picturesque alpine landscapes. From snow-capped mountains to lush meadows, the scenery is breathtaking and diverse.

The Old Salt Road, also known as the Route du Sel, is an ancient trade route that historically connected the Mediterranean region with the interior of the French Alps. The route was crucial for the transportation and trade of salt, which was a valuable commodity in ancient times due to its use as a preservative and seasoning. The Old Salt Road starts in the Rhône Valley near the town of Salin-de-Giraud in southern France and winds its way northwards through the French Alps, crossing mountain passes and valleys. Some of the ancient towns that grew out of the salt trade still exist and retain their historical charm, for example, Seyssel, Albertville, and Barcelonnette.

Seyssel is a charming commune situated in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Seyssel is known for its picturesque setting along the banks of the Rhône River and its historical significance as a stop on the old salt road. Albertville gained international recognition when it hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, becoming a hub for winter sports and tourism. Located in the Savoie region, Albertville is surrounded by stunning alpine landscapes. Founded in 1231 by the Count of Provence, Ramon Berenguer IV, Barcelonnette was named after Barcelona, reflecting the influence of Catalonia in the region. Over the centuries, Barcelonnette thrived as a trading centre due to its strategic location on the crossroads of important trade routes, including the old salt road.
