It is easy to buy for worst-case scenarios and end up carrying heavy, expensive equipment you do not know how to use. A better approach is to build a recovery system. That means understanding what causes vehicles to stop making progress, which tools solve those problems, and where the limits sit for both driver and machine.

Recovery equipment is often spoken about as though it is one thing. In practice, it falls into a few distinct jobs. Some kit helps you regain traction. Some creates a safe connection between vehicles. Some reduces tyre pressures to improve flotation. Some allows self-recovery when there is no second vehicle available.
That distinction matters because the best overland recovery equipment for a green lane in the UK is not necessarily the same as the right loadout for soft dune work in Morocco or a remote rocky route in southern Europe. Mud, sand, snow and stepy, broken terrain all demand slightly different priorities.
