The mistake is looking for one perfect number. There is no universal pressure that works everywhere, because tyre choice, vehicle weight, load distribution, speed and terrain all change the answer. A lightly loaded Defender on all-terrains will want something different from a fully equipped touring Land Cruiser on heavy-duty tyres. Good pressure selection is about working within a safe range and understanding what the tyre is being asked to do.
How to choose tyre pressures without guessing
Start with the manufacturer’s road pressures as your baseline. Those figures are designed for normal tarmac use, with predictable speeds, steady temperatures and standard loading. They are not off-road magic numbers, but they are the correct reference point because they reflect the vehicle’s weight, axle loads and tyre size when used as intended.
From there, adjust for terrain and load rather than following somebody else’s favourite setting. If your vehicle is carrying drawers, recovery kit, water, camping equipment and a roof load, your tyre pressures may need to stay higher than a near-standard vehicle running the same route. Equally, a pressure that works at 15 mph on a rocky lane may be completely unsuitable at 50 mph on a fast gravel road.
This is where discipline matters. Lower pressure increases the tyre’s footprint and allows the carcass to conform to the terrain. That usually means better grip and a more settled ride. Expedition travel adds complexity because the terrain changes constantly while the vehicle remains heavily loaded. That is where experience pays dividends. You learn when to compromise and when to stop and make a proper adjustment. It may be acceptable to run a middle-ground pressure for a short mixed section if speeds stay controlled. It is not acceptable to charge into deep sand on near-road pressures because airing down feels inconvenient.
