Northumberland 4×4 Adventure – Approximate Itinerary
A scenic overland journey across the wild border country
This tour has yet to be trialled, but it promises to be a spectacular weekend route. Day 1 will be something like the below; the details for day 2 will be added later. We intend to recce the route for both days in the near future. Early booking is strongly recommended.
Overview
This route takes you through the remote uplands of County Durham into Northumberland, linking historic drovers’ roads, military tracks, and classic green lanes. Expect a mix of:
- Open moorland tracks
- Forest sections
- Rocky climbs and descents
- Big skies and proper isolation
Terrain and weather can quickly change the challenge level.
Day Plan
08:30 – Meet & Briefing (Stanhope Area)
- Meet at a suitable café or rendezvous point near Stanhope
- Breakfast, introductions, and radio setup
- Safety briefing and convoy protocol
- Overview of the day and conditions
- Ease into the day with flowing tracks, leaving Stanhope
- Gradual climb onto open moorland
- Early sections ideal for:
- Vehicle familiarisation
- Radio discipline
- Getting into convoy rhythm
Terrain: gravel tracks, ruts, occasional washouts. If we do the ‘H’, it will add to the challenge level – this will depend on the ground conditions on the day.
Late Morning – High Moorland Section
- Transition onto more exposed routes
- Expansive views across the North Pennines and into Northumberland
- Sections may include:
- Rocky steps
- Narrower lanes
- Peaty ground, depending on conditions
📸 Photo stops are highly recommended here — this is where the route really opens up.
Midday – Remote Crossing Section
- One of the highlights of the route
- Long stretches of uninterrupted driving
- True “middle of nowhere” feel
This is where:
- Weather plays a big role
- Ground conditions can vary from easy to surprisingly technical
- 13:30 – Lunch Stop
- Remote moorland stop or sheltered forest edge
- Time to relax, chat, and take in the surroundings
Afternoon – Forest & Mixed Terrain
- Gradual descent into more sheltered terrain
- Tracks through forested sections
- Possible features:
- Muddy stretches
- Water run-offs
- Tight turns between trees
Driving becomes more varied and engaging here.
Mid–Late Afternoon – Transition Towards Slaley
- Rejoin a mix of minor roads and final green lanes
- Terrain becomes less exposed
- A nice wind-down phase after the more remote sections
16:30 – Finish (Slaley Area)
- Regroup near Slaley / Slaley Forest
- Debrief and wrap-up
- Optional:
- Café/pub stop
- Early evening meal
Terrain & Difficulty
- Overall: Moderate to challenging
- Challenges depend on:
- Weather (wet = significantly harder)
- Peat and drainage conditions
- Driver experience
- Depending on weather conditions, this tour may include the ‘H’ but not the notorious cross-route, which we deem to be very high risk.
Suitable for:
- Standard 4x4s with good ground clearance
- All-terrain tyres recommended
What Makes This Route Special
- Huge sense of space and isolation
- Classic Northumberland/Border landscapes
- A proper “overland feel” without going abroad
- Brilliant mix of flowing and technical driving
